When one pathway closes, student-athletes can lose opportunities. Arizona deserves a thoughtful conversation about expanding access.
A Lost Opportunity for Arizona Student-Athletes
In 2018, Glendale, Mesa, Phoenix, and Scottsdale community colleges played their final football seasons after the Maricopa County Community College District decided to discontinue football. The district cited financial and operational challenges. The decision also raised an enduring question: where can talented Arizona student-athletes continue their education and athletic development when they need another pathway?
Why Junior College Football Matters
Not every talented high school athlete receives a four-year scholarship offer. Some develop later, some need additional academic preparation, and others have limited recruiting exposure. Community college football has historically provided a more affordable, local opportunity to pursue college coursework while competing and preparing for possible transfer.
The Impact Goes Beyond Football
The loss of local programs can affect student-athletes, families, high school coaches, and communities. Athletes may need to look out of state or pursue different options, often at greater cost. These concerns deserve consideration alongside the very real expenses of coaching, insurance, facilities, and academic support.
A Constructive Conversation About the Future
Discussions about restoring Arizona junior college football should focus on student success and financial sustainability. How many athletes need this pathway? What would safe, well-supported programs cost? Could private sponsorships and community partnerships contribute without diverting resources from academic priorities? How would outcomes such as retention, graduation, and successful transfers be measured?
“Talent exists everywhere. Access does not.”
Where Arizona Boosters Foundation Stands
At Arizona Boosters Foundation, our belief is simple: Talent exists everywhere. Access does not. Through initiatives such as Driving Opportunity, we work to connect student-athletes with college exposure and useful resources. We believe the educational and developmental value of additional pathways deserves serious consideration, while recognizing that any athletic program requires responsible long-term planning.
Building Solutions Together
Educators, coaches, families, college leaders, local businesses, and nonprofit partners can help assess unmet needs and explore solutions. Possible support includes scholarships, transportation, academic mentoring, recruiting education, and sponsorships. The goal should not simply be to bring football back; it should be to build opportunities that help students succeed in class, on the field, and beyond graduation.
An Invitation to Join the Conversation
We welcome thoughtful, evidence-based discussion about expanding postsecondary athletic pathways in Arizona. Whether traditional junior college football returns or alternative programs emerge, student-athletes should remain at the center of the conversation. One additional opportunity can change a young person's future.
